TI Introduces Low-Power Series Voltage Reference Family in a Tiny SC70-3 Package

Friday, September 28th, 2007
Devices offer high accuracy and excellent low temperature drift Texas Instruments Incorporated today introduced a family of low-power series voltage references featuring high accuracy (+/-0.15 percent max) and low temperature drift (30ppm/°C max) in a SC70-3 package - 40% smaller than a SOT23. The combination of micro-size packaging and low current consumption make the REF33xx family suitable for portable and battery-powered consumer applications, and its high accuracy and low temperature drift make it a good choice for medical equipment, handheld instrumentation, test equipment and data acquisition systems. High initial accuracy, low noise (28uVpp/V output) and a robust output drive of +/-5mA enable precision, low power ADC (such as ADS1000 and ADS7866) and MSP430 applications. The low temperature drift minimizes system error over temperature. Additionally, the low dropout voltage of 110mV (typ, 25°C) supports precision spot voltage regulation for battery-powered applications. The REF33xx family offers six output voltages: 1.25V (REF3312), 1.8V (REF3318), 2.048V (REF3320), 2.5V (REF3325), 3.0V (REF3330) and 3.3V (REF3333). The devices can operate at a supply voltage 110mV above the output voltage under specified load conditions, except the REF3312 which requires a minimum supply voltage of 1.8V. All models in this family are designed for the wide industrial temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. AVAILABLE TODAY The six versions of the REF33xx family are available now in SOT23-3 and SC70-3 packages from TI and its authorized distributors. The devices are priced at US$0.85 in 1,000-piece quantities. TI offers analog engineers a wide-ranging support infrastructure that includes training and seminars, design tools and utilities, technical documentation, evaluation modules, an online KnowledgeBase, a product information hotline and a comprehensive offering of samples that ship within 24 hours of request. ABOUT TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Texas Instruments Incorporated provides innovative DSP and analog technologies to meet our customers' real world signal processing requirements. In addition to Semiconductor, the company includes the educational and productivity solutions business. TI is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, and has manufacturing, design or sales operations in more than 25 countries.

Hand Art and the Mystery of Creativity.

Kitty Hand Art

You know that I love art, yes?  There is just something kind of magical about creativity.  Artistic talent is definately a rare gift.  One of the reasons that I share art on my site is that many artists have moody temperments (artistic temperments).  And, I like to show that moodiness in itself is not a always a bad thing.  In fact, artistic genious is often coupled with manic depression.  I believe that creating beauty out of pain or sadness is healing and transforming for the artist, and adds depth to the human condition.

Kay Redfield Jamison is in the news again with her exposure on Oprah this week.  Touched with Fire: Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament is the book she authored exploring the link between creativity and bipolor/depressive disorders.  She examines the histories of well-known artists and their familys to draw a connection with moodiness and creativity.  In the book she is somewhat repetative, however, her thesis is a sound one, and the book is worth a read.  Manic depressives don't get enough good press as far as I am concerned.  Go to Powell's Books for a review of this work.  Or, read an interview with the author here.

Check out Wikipedia for a list of talented and interesting folks with manic depression.

Vincent Van Gogh is the prima example of the manic depressive artist.  His use of color in his own self portraits, gives us the clues needed to see into his moodiness as part of his creative process.  See the Van Gogh Gallery for examples of his work.  If you are new to Van Gogh check out his self portraits, it is here that one sees clearly his use of blues and cool colors with his decidedly sad face.  Contrast that to his use of the warm colors of oranges and yellows in many of his landscapes.  These same landscapes emit an almost manic glow.

There are many more of these amazing hand paintings at Bored Night.  Obviously, not all artists are moody, and I am not suggesting that this artist is bipolar.  I am only suggesting that he is talented.

“If you puke again, you’ll have to eat it.”

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Faye Clark, a nurse aide at Heritage Hill in Big Stone Gap, had her license revoked in August after the board found her guilty of abusing and neglecting nursing home patients.

The consent order says that between Jan. '02 and July '06 Clark did the following:

a.) was very "negative and snappy" to a resident and told her "not to start her damn shit."

b.) was "hateful" and "rough" when moving a resident to a wheelchair.

c.) when asked to take a resident to the bathroom she said, "We'll get there when we get there; we are not stopping."

d.) told a resident who had just vomited, "If you puke again, you'll have to eat it."

At an informal conference with the board, Clark denied any instances of abuse. She was fired from Heritage Hill in July '06.

NMC Documents

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Hello,

We keep getting asked for these, so...

I've put the electronic links to these documents on Update, and I've told the nursing and midwifery staff about the e-access. One or two have got back to me saying that they'll put the info on Blackboard, others may well tell their students in due course. If you get asked, direct students towards www.nmc-uk.org, and look for the link in the little menu on the right, which says publications.

You can access standards and guidance from here, and details of publications only available online, and advice on recordkeeping and medicines management can be found here.
